OUR MISSION

Our mission to promote, advance, and support the development of the Vietnamese American Community and families through educational, social, and cultural programs. Huong Viet seeks to advocate and encourage the active participation and full integration of Vietnamese Americans into the East Bay Community.

Huong Viet Community Center wants to spread our message of hope and compassion. We believe that a single action can make a difference in the community, and that collective action can greatly impact the world. Through advocacy and outreach activities, our team works tirelessly each day to contribute their part to the greater good.

VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE SCHOOL

Here at Huong Viet Community Center, we are driven by a single goal; to maintain our Vietnamese heritage through the education of language and culture.  We strive to build productive relationships and make a positive impact with all of our pursuits.

Since 1987, Huong Viet has taught youths and young adults through its Vietnamese Language School program.  Our Vietnamese classes are held at Oakland Unity High School every Saturday morning from August through May.

OUR HISTORY

In 1987, a group of parents and volunteers came together to address the social and educational issues facing Vietnamese families living in America. They envisioned a center that seeks to involve the youths, parents, schools, and other social services providers working together to solve social problems by building on the strength of the Vietnamese family tradition. Thus, Huong Viet is a reflection of the community-building efforts of those parents and volunteers.

In 1991, the Huong Viet Community Center became a non-profit tax-exempt community center formed to address the educational, social, and cultural needs of Vietnamese youths and their families in the East Bay. All efforts in Huong Viet have been from volunteers and parents, who are students, professionals and leaders in the Vietnamese American Community in the Bay Area.

LION & CULTURAL DANCES

Traditional dance helps preserve our culture.

The lion dance and cultural dance are important traditions in Vietnam. The lion dance helps to bring in good luck for the coming year with its elaborate dancing and drumming.

The Huong Viet Lion Dance and Cultural Dances have been in existence since 1996 and consists of Vietnamese youths who perform in many events and celebrations throughout the year.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL EVENTS

Cultural events preserve our heritage.

We hold social and cultural events to encourage the preservation and appreciation of Vietnamese cultural traditions through the annual celebration of Vietnamese holidays such as Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (Tet Trung Thu) and Lunar New Year (Tet Nguyen Dan). We also sponsor cultural and historical activities to create a better understanding and appreciation of Vietnamese and Vietnamese American cultures.
