Saigon Deli Sandwiches
At the corner of International Boulevard and 14th Ave, a cultural-infused family restaurant, ran by both Tony Torres and Dieu, serves both Vietnamese dishes and Hispanic cuisines. Opening in July of 2011, founder and co-owner Dieu, also founder of Oakland's famous Vietnamese sandwich shop Banh Mi Ba Le, decided to open a new restaurant selling Vietnamese sandwiches. She knew she wanted to do something different and something unique in the food industry so in 2012, she collaborated with co-owner Tony Torres, to infuse Hispanic cuisines into the restaurant's menu. As a school, we were privileged with the opportunity to interview both co-owners and their inspiration behind running this restaurant.
Interviewing the very friendly co-owner Tony Torres, we discovered a little bit about his interesting history. Coming to the United States more than 30 years ago at the age of 13, he resided in Los Angeles, Los Altos, Monterey and eventually Oakland. At the age of seven, he believed in God and asked to one day have a restaurant. With a good heart, Mr. Torres believes that anyone who comes to his restaurant will never leave hungry. Inspirationally and with good intentions, Mr. Torres is looking forward to one day cater for school events and donate a portion of his proceeds to the school. "Nothing is better than to help schools." When asked for some advice on starting and running a business, he looked directly into each of our eyes and said, "You have to be excited to give to others, make sure it's the best you have and then you can give."
While at his restaurant interviewing him, we were grateful to be able to try his famous spicy tacos. Judging by the speechless comments from our students, I can say on behalf of my fellow classmates that this restaurant does in fact make amazing and delicious tacos.
If you ever find yourself hungry and craving a Vietnamese Sandwich or delicious Tacos, make sure to stop by and check out Saigon Deli Sandwiches.
